    • Cross-species genetic mapping of targets in metabolism and aging Dr. Johan Auwerx, Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale, Lausanne, Switzerland, was trained as a physician scientist and has extensive research expertise and experience in cellular and molecular physiology, metabolism, and genetics. He has been at the forefront of systems biology and holistic approaches to map the signaling networks and pathways that govern metabolism. Dr. Auwerx has pioneered a unique and powerful cross-species genetic and multi-layered omics approach using cellular models, C.elegans, genetically engineered mouse models, mouse genetic reference populations, and human cohorts. This approach provided new and effective ways to identify and validate candidate genes and pathways involved in metabolic control with high clinical translational value.

    • Metabolic surgery for type 2 diabetes: experience from Asia Professor Moon Kyu Lee is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA). His leadership has significantly contributed to the recent progresses of the KDA in many aspects including sciences, communication, and international cooperation. In this plenary session, he will deliver a lecture on the epidemiology of diabetes and metabolic syndrome focusing on novel risk factors. Based on the facts on this issue, he will suggest how we can deal with the current epidemic of diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

    • The pivotal role of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex flux in cellular energy metabolism Prof. In-Kyu Lee is a professor of internal medicine, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine. His major research interest is focused on the role of mitochondrial enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) and its kinase pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) in diabetes and insulin resistance. In this plenary lecture, he will share his recent discoveries which highlight the importance of PDC flux in cellular energy metabolism and its potential application in strategies to ameliorate insulin resistance and associated pathological conditions.
