Type 1 diabetic patients have different clinical characteristics and natural courses compared to type 2 diabetics and these differences require different standards of care. The management of type 1 diabetes must take the major differences between children of various ages and adults into account. In this session, four speakers with a volume of experience in the field of management of type 1 diabetes will deliver a lecture, focused on real clinical practice (general management guideline, educational programs for improving self-management, dietary intervention, and psychosocial understanding). Type 2 diabetes mellitus is preventable disease and many studies show that people at high risk for diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by intensive lifestyle modification programs. Now, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea and Korean Diabetes Association are working together to make a Korean national program for diabetes prevention. In this session, Prof. Dae Jung Kim (Ajou University, Korea) will present about the food and nutrient as a risk for diabetes, Prof. Yoon Ju Song (Catholic University, Korea) will discuss the nutritional strategy for diabetes prevention, Prof. Hyunjung Lim (Kyung Hee University, Korea) will introduce a new education program based behavior-change theory and Prof. James A Dunbar (Deakin University, Australia) will share and discuss the results and experience of 10 year diabetes prevention study in Australia.

In this self-care session, we will have two distinguished speakers. Dr. Masatake Sugimoto from Japan will explain how important it is for medical practitioners to switch their viewpoint from ‘a doctor manages their patient’ to ‘a patient manages their diabetes’. Dr. Hannah Mitter from U.S.will discuss how community health educators, including physicians, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists, other medical professionals, and trained non-medical personnel can participate community lifestyle intervention programs.
